Altun Ha is one of Belize’s most accessible and popular ancient Maya sites, located just under an hour’s drive from Belize City. Once a vital ceremonial and trade center, Altun Ha thrived during the Classic Period (AD 250–900) and played a key role in regional commerce, particularly in jade and obsidian. The site covers about five square miles and features more than 500 identified structures, although only a fraction are excavated and open to the public.

At the heart of the site are two main plazas surrounded by large temples and pyramids. The most iconic is the Temple of the Masonry Altars, which rises approximately 54 feet and offers stunning views of the surrounding rainforest. This pyramid is where a jade carving of Kinich Ahau, the Maya Sun God, was discovered and is now known as Belize’s most famous artifact.

Altun Ha offers a balance of history and tranquility. The well-maintained grounds make for an easy and enjoyable walk, suitable for visitors of all ages. The site is often accompanied by sightings of local wildlife, including armadillos, birds, and howler monkeys.
